Abstract:

This text intends to draw a short overview of different definitions of gesture, those commonly used in the research and development referring to music interaction and control.

By checking the large amount of published material on gestural control of music, one may certainly be astonished by the different and sometimes oppposed meaning of the word gesture. Since there would be too simplistic (and probably incorrect) to try to establish a universal definition, we will be satisfied to point out the main differences, as well as indicate complementary references about the subject, so that the reader may (hopefully) have a better idea of this subject.
