GDGM - Report from the Fourth Meeting

July, 10th 1997 - Salle B22 - IRCAM

This meeting started with a discussion about the relationship among different papers on the subject of gestural control of music.

The basic papers discussed were: C. Cadoz, "Instrumental Gesture and Musical Composition", ICMC88, pp. 1-12; R. Vertegaal et al, "Towards a musician's cockpit: Transducer, feedback and musical function", ICMC96, pp. 308-311 and J. Pressing, "Cybernetic issues in interactive performance systems", Computer Music Journal, vol. 14, no. 1, pp. 12-25, 1990.

The objective was to relate Cadoz's pioneering work on instrumental gestures to Pressing and Vertegaal's excelent papers on interfaces/controllers. The idea is to relate the design of a gestural interface or the choice of a specific sensor to the gesture one wants to capture. This implies in a study of gestural functions and limitations, their relation to musical functions and the need for feedback.

These three papers were discussed, mainly Vertegaal's one, where he makes a link between musical functions, sensors and type of feedback - the ability of a certain sensor to perform a specific musical function and the ffedback it is able to produce.

Many question have been raised and the discussion went on to practical aspects such as Mihalic's Pedalophone and Suguru's Violin.

A repport on this subject is being prepared by M. Wanderley and J. Rovan and shall be available soon.
