GDGM - Report from the Sixth Meeting

October, 17th 1997 - Studio D - IRCAM

Mark Goldstein, Consultant, Invited Lecturer

Mark Goldstein met with the GDGM on , giving a lecture/demonstration of his latest work with Don Buchla's "Lighting" controllers. All who attended (and there were quite a lot of us in Studio D!) will attest to the fact that Mark's demonstration was captivating, thanks to his energy and the facility that he has with the Lighting controllers.

Mark demonstrated basic use of the Lighting, and then went on to show his elaborate MAX programming for mapping the Lighting outputs to effective musical parameters. He brought up several important issues, including the relation of perceived gesture to sound output, and performance aspects of dealing with such a controller.

Goldstein's performance focused on the world of percussive gestures, due to the nature of the Lighting. Several good questions/points were raised in the discussion, including an interesting observation by Vincent Hayward that the relation between gesture and sound appeared to be "out of phase".
