How to encode Windows Media audio & video

Well, sorry for Mac users, but Windows Media Encoder only exists for Windows.

Apart from that, things are not this simple ; there are currently ( September 2002 ) three encoder versions :
* version 9 - works only for XP & 2000
* version 7.1 - works on all recent Windows versions
* version 8 - a command line MSDOS like utility.

If you don't use XP or 2000, the 7.1 is all right.

One good point : all versions are free. Not quite easy to use, not very stable, but free nevertheless.
