Research Interests

  • Computer-Aided Composition environments
  • Visual Programming and Music Representations
  • Signal / Symbolic relations: high-level control of sound synthesis and sound spatialization.

My works and projects mainly focus on computer-aided composition and are related to the OpenMusic visual programming / computer-aided composition environment.
Since 2004 I am working as researcher and developer in the Music Representation research group. I have been particularly involved in the Musique Lab project, and created for this project a pedagogical application (formerly called ML-Maquette, now Musique Lab 2) based and developed on top of OpenMusic. For this project I also developed the first multi-platform release of OpenMusic for Mac/Windows, OM 5.
I have coordinated and directed the publication of the OM Composer's Book 2 (2008), a collection of text written by composers about their musical works and experiences with computer-aided composition and OpenMusic.
My PhD (supervised by Carlos Agon) was about the relations between computer-aided composition and sound synthesis / electroacoustic music composition. I developed in this context a set of extensions of OpenMusic for sound analysis, processing, and synthesis, and have been led to other related problems such as the low level music and sound representations (e.g. manipulation of sound description data using SDIF), or the temporal issues in computer and compositional systems. I also worked and extended OMChroma, a framework for the control of sound synthesis developed in collaboration with composer Marco Stroppa.
More recently I took part in the ANR Sample Orchestrator project and worked on a client in OpenMusic for the Orchidée automatic orchestration tool.
While keeping actively involved in the previous projects and in the regular follow-up of OpenMusic, my current works concern sound spatialization and the different possibilities to deal with 3D data, trajectories, spatial sound synthesis, etc. in the computer-aided compositional framework.

Publications

The OM Composer's Book is a collection of texts written by composers, each chapter describing the approach and processes used for the creation of one or various of their works, all of them using the OpenMusic computer-aided composition environment. This project has been initiated by Carlos Agon in 2004 with a first volume published in 2006 in the Musique/Sciences collections of Editions Delatour / Ircam. The second volume was published in 2008.
