Music Composition, improvisation and performance through body movements, by R. Manzaneras and E. Morales

Abstract:

Music and dance have been traditionally complementary arts, however their integration has not been always satisfactory. IN general, a dancer needs to conform his/her movements to a pre-defined piece of music, leaving him/her very little room for improvisation. In this paper, a system called SICIB, capable of music composition, improvisation and performance through body movements is described. SICIB uses data from sensors attached to dancers and if-then rules to couple choreographic gestures with music. The paper describes the choreographic elements considered by the system (such as position, velocity, acceleration, curvature and torsion of movements, jumps, etc.), as well as the musical elements that can be affected by them (e.g., intensity, tone, music sequences, etc). The architecture of SICIB, which allows real-time performance, is described. Experimental results on a live concert as well as future research directions are given.
