Abstract:
In this work, which is the result of a collaboration between a composer and an electronic engineer, it is presented a model for the understanding of musical gestures in a interactive live performance contest. The basic idea is the musical duet, where the two performers, a pianist and a computer, play on the same music instrument. The computer performs some refractions of the musical gestures of the performer in order to enforce the musical idea the player is performing in his communication with the audience. Some kind of musical mirrors are presented. From the kind of refraction it depends which musical gesture has to be recognized. Some agents were created, with the aim of mapping, in particular, the hurry of being mirrored and the musical tension of the pianist. Using this model a tool was developed, performing some controlled refractions. The tool can be used for both in a musical duet and in a computer generated performance: in this latter case the computer refracts its own performance in order to give a sense of coherence to the performance, due to the musical mirrors.
